The big gear in the center of this is called the sun gear, and the smaller gears circling around the sun gear are referred to as planet gears. The design aids the gearbox in doing its job well.

This allows it to raise more weight to a greater height without fatiguing; it will also have a longer use life before repair and/or replacement are required. The gearbox is an analogue to gear ratios and multiplies the motor and thereby getting a much leveraged and powerful rotary movement.

So, what happens when a planetary gearbox is engaged? It's actually rather interesting to witness! The large sun gear in the center remains stationary, as the motor turns. Then the smaller planet gears begin to revolve around it. These planet gears rotate on their own axes while they orbit around the sun gear. This distinctive motion allows the output gear at the end of the gearbox to rotate considerably faster. This manner of movement is what allows the output gear to spin quickly even when the motor itself is turning slowly!

If you need heavy torque, you might choose a strong gearbox with more planet gears. More gears means that the motor can be stronger, which is great for heavy duty jobs!
